About ÄITI

ÄITI was founded by Ritva Kariniemi, a Finnish-born designer whose career began after moving to London in the late 1970s to study at the London College of Fashion. After graduating, Ritva worked alongside renowned designers such as Bill Gibb and Benny Ong, gaining invaluable experience before moving into design for manufacturers supplying to leading high street retailers.

In 1984, Ritva launched her first label, Extravert by Ritva Kariniemi, which revolutionised the use of Lycra in fashion. The brand specialised in women’s stretch, draped separates and knitwear, quickly gaining recognition and culminating in the prestigious Queen’s Award for Export Achievement in 1991. Extravert’s success led to two standalone shops in Japan, further establishing Ritva’s international reputation.

The name ÄITI, meaning mother in Finnish, was inspired by Ritva’s personal journey into motherhood. After a successful career in interior design, she returned to her Nordic fashion roots in 2016, launching ÄITI with a clear vision: to create timeless, wearable, and affordable knitwear that transcends fleeting trends.

ÄITI reflects the essence of Nordic style — clean lines, understated elegance, and a commitment to sustainability. Ritva designs each piece using ethically sourced yarns, including wool, cotton, cashmere, and innovative sustainable blends from trusted suppliers. Many designs are complemented by coordinated scarves and shawls, offering a complete and considered look.

Working closely with her long-standing factory partners, Ritva oversees every stage of production — from initial sketches to final garments — ensuring each piece meets her exacting standards. The result is a curated collection of designer knitwear that is stylish, comfortable, and made to last.
